Former President Kovind Launches Responsible Nations Index

Former President Ram Nath Kovind will launch the new Responsible Nations Index (RNI) on January 19 . This global index evaluates countries on their responsible power use towards citizens, the international community, and the planet, according to World Intellectual Foundation (WIF) officials.

Understanding the Responsible Nations Index

The RNI offers a new framework for global assessment, moving beyond traditional economic or military strength metrics. The World Intellectual Foundation (WIF), a prominent think tank, developed the index. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) provided academic support. The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Mumbai, validated its methodology.

Sudhanshu Mittal, Secretary of the World Intellectual Foundation, stated the RNI’s core objective. He stated it initiates a global discussion on national responsibility. The index asks how nations act responsibly, not just their power. This approach redefines global leadership.

Core Principles and Evaluation

Mittal emphasized ethics, sustainability, and international cooperation as central to the RNI’s evaluation framework. The index moves past traditional benchmarks such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) performance, per capita income, or military expenditure. Instead, it measures ethical conduct and stewardship.

The RNI focuses on a nation’s commitment to citizens, environment, and international community. This comprehensive approach provides a holistic view of national progress, beyond economic growth or geopolitical influence.

Index Structure and Scope

The index is built upon three core dimensions: internal responsibility , environmental responsibility , and external responsibility . It covers 154 countries worldwide. All data is transparent and globally sourced, ensuring consistency. Mittal clarified the RNI is an academic and moral framework.

The RNI fosters global reflection, dialogue, and policy learning. It does not function as a geopolitical ranking tool. It encourages countries to consider their impact on people and the planet.

Operational Details

The Responsible Nations Index is operationalized through a detailed system. This system includes seven dimensions, 15 aspects, and 58 indicators. These indicators derive from globally recognized datasets. This methodology ensures transparency and comparability across evaluated countries.

Mittal noted a gap in existing global indices focusing on GDP, competitiveness, or influence. The RNI addresses this by incorporating ethical conduct, restraint, and stewardship.

Annual Release and Evolution

Following its initial launch, the Responsible Nations Index will be released annually in March. Jagdish Mukhi, former Governor and WIF Chairman, noted current global politics make the index timely.

Mukhi confirmed the RNI is a dynamic tool, not static. The foundation plans annual revisions. These will reflect evolving national performance and conduct, ensuring currency and credibility.
