An assistant superintendent of the Maharashtra education board was arrested on Friday. He is accused of taking a bribe to appoint a writer for a Class 10 student. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) made the arrest in Navi Mumbai.
Bribery Allegations Surface
The accused, identified as Sudam Lotan Chavan, 57, worked at the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education’s Mumbai divisional office. He allegedly demanded money for a student with a learning disability.
Case Details
A private teacher approached the board. The teacher represented the mother of a Class 10 student. The student requires a writer for the February 2026 examinations due to a learning disability. This application was authorized by the student’s mother.
Initially, board staff informed the teacher about a prescribed fee of ₹200. The teacher was told to submit the application. However, Chavan allegedly asked the teacher aside. He demanded ₹10,000. This amount was for arranging a writer and changing a subject for the exam.
Chavan later agreed to accept ₹8,000. This was to approve the application, according to police.
ACB Investigation and Arrest
Following the bribe demand, the private teacher filed a complaint with the ACB on February 12. The ACB then set up a trap. The agency caught Chavan accepting ₹8,000. The bribe consisted of sixteen ₹500 currency notes.
A case has been registered against Chavan. The Vashi Police Station is handling the investigation.
