Delhi University Approves Odia Studies Centre, New Girls’ Hostel

Delhi University’s Executive Council has approved significant academic and infrastructure initiatives, including establishing a Centre for Odia Studies and allocating 3.7 acres for a new girls’ hostel. These key decisions emerged from a recent council meeting, alongside approvals for new campus facilities and financial planning.

Centre for Odia Studies Approved

The Executive Council accepted recommendations to create a Centre for Odia Studies. This new academic body will focus on expanding engagement with Odia language, literature, culture, civilization, and traditions. The centre plans to launch a two-year Master of Arts (MA) program. It will also support doctoral and postdoctoral research in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s emphasis on Indian languages and knowledge systems. Future plans for the centre include introducing certificate, diploma, and undergraduate elective courses, broadening access to Odia studies for a wider range of students.

New Girls’ Hostel and Campus Facilities

A major housing development for female students is underway. The university will construct a new women’s hostel on 3.7 acres of vacant land located at its Dhaka campus. This land allocation includes 2 acres from the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI) and 1.7 acres from the Delhi School of Social Work. The new hostel aims to significantly improve accommodation facilities and enhance security measures for female students, addressing a crucial need for student welfare on campus.

Additional infrastructure projects also received approval. The building committee’s proposal for a new broadcasting studio, to be located near the Vice Regal Lodge, was cleared. This studio project carries an estimated cost of Rs 2.32 crore and will enhance the university’s capabilities for media production and communication. Furthermore, the Arts Faculty Convention Hall will undergo renovation and be renamed “Vande Mataram Hall,” marking a notable change to a central university venue.
