Dehradun, Uttarakhand – Dehradun district faces a critical issue with its school infrastructure. Over 100 government school buildings are currently in a dilapidated condition. A recent assessment found 96 of these structures unfit for safe use by students and staff. These unsafe buildings are now scheduled for immediate demolition to ensure public safety.
District Magistrate (DM) Savin Bansal initiated the comprehensive review. He requested a detailed report from the Education Department regarding the state of school facilities. The department’s findings confirmed that a total of 104 school buildings across the district were in poor or dangerous condition. This move underscores the administration’s commitment to providing secure learning environments.
Identifying Unsafe School Structures
The assessment categorized each building based on its structural integrity and safety. A significant number, 79 school buildings , were declared completely unusable. These structures pose severe risks. They are slated for full demolition to prevent any accidents. This category includes 13 secondary schools and 66 primary schools . Thousands of students were previously attending these facilities, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Another 17 school buildings received a classification of partially unusable. For these, only specific sections deemed dangerous will be dismantled. The remaining parts of the buildings are considered safe. They can continue to be used after the hazardous portions are removed. Furthermore, eight other schools were identified as being in poor condition but did not require demolition. These buildings will undergo necessary repairs and maintenance to restore them to safe standards.
Ensuring Continued Student Education
Student safety and uninterrupted learning remain paramount. Authorities have already established alternative teaching arrangements for 63 of the affected schools . This rapid action minimizes disruption to students’ education. Plans are also actively underway to finalize substitute setups for the remaining 16 schools . These temporary solutions include establishing classrooms in safer community spaces or relocating students to nearby functional schools.
DM Bansal issued a clear directive: no educational activities will proceed in any building deemed unsafe. This policy reinforces the administration’s non-negotiable stance on student welfare. The district aims to complete all necessary transitions swiftly and transparently.
Funding, Demolition, and Accountability
To expedite the demolition and ensure proper safety protocols, an amount of Rs 1 crore has been sanctioned. This fund will cover all costs associated with tearing down the hazardous structures. It also provides for implementing essential safety measures around demolition sites. The Public Works Department (PWD) conducted the critical structural evaluations. Their expert assessments provided the basis for the demolition orders.
