College Student Death: Ragging & Harassment Charges Filed

Police in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, have booked three college students and a professor following the death of a 19-year-old female student. The student died on December 26, 2024 , after alleged incidents of ragging and sexual harassment. Authorities registered the case on Thursday, according to police statements made on Friday.

Investigation Initiated After Father’s Complaint

The investigation began after the victim’s father filed a formal complaint. He alleged his daughter suffered abuse from senior students and a college professor. This complaint detailed events leading to her hospitalization and eventual death.

Allegations Against Senior Students

The father specifically accused three senior students of physical assault. These students were identified as Harshita, Aakriti, and Komolika. He claimed these seniors beat his daughter on September 18, 2024 . Police have booked these three students for ragging and voluntarily causing hurt.

Professor Faces Sexual Harassment Charges

In addition to the student allegations, the father accused college professor Ashok Kumar of engaging in obscene acts with his daughter. These acts constitute sexual harassment. Police have formally booked Professor Kumar based on these serious allegations.

Hospitalization and Tragic Death

The victim was hospitalized following the alleged beating and harassment incidents. She received treatment in a Ludhiana hospital. Despite medical efforts, she died during treatment on December 26, 2024 . Her death prompted the official police complaint and subsequent action.

Reason for Delayed Complaint

The victim’s father explained why the complaint was not lodged earlier. He stated his daughter was severely traumatized after the incidents. Her immediate hospitalization also prevented the family from reporting the events sooner. The focus remained on her health during that critical period.

Legal Charges Filed

Police have registered the case under several sections of law. These include BNS Section 75 for sexual harassment. BNS Section 115(2) addresses voluntarily causing hurt. BNS Section 3(5) relates to common intention among individuals. Furthermore, Section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institution (Prohibition of) Ragging Act 2009 has been invoked. This act specifically targets harmful ragging practices in educational institutions.
