A Class 10 student died by suicide earlier this week in Delhi. On Saturday, parents and friends gathered at Jantar Mantar to protest. They demanded strict action against school authorities and teachers, alleging institutional negligence contributed to the student’s death.
Student’s Death and Investigation
Police reported the student jumped from the Rajendra Place metro station platform at 2:34 pm on Tuesday. Emergency services transported the student to BLK Super Speciality Hospital. There, medical personnel officially declared the student deceased. Authorities confirmed the recovery of a suicide note from the site of the incident.
The suicide note reportedly named specific teachers, holding them responsible for the student’s prolonged mental distress. The student demanded strict accountability and action against these individuals. In the note, the student also conveyed apologies to his mother and brother. A specific request for organ donation was included.
Family Allegations and Concerns
Family members expressed profound shock and stated they had been largely unaware of the full extent of the student’s suffering. The student’s aunt recounted that the student frequently voiced complaints about difficulties at school. She further alleged that the student had directly informed both school counsellors and teachers about intentions to commit suicide. Crucially, the family asserted that school authorities never communicated these serious warnings to them.
Chandrasheel Dhawan, the student’s uncle, conveyed the family’s devastation. He stated, “The child must receive the justice he deserves,” underscoring the family’s demand for accountability. Family accounts suggest the student harbored significant creative ambitions, having discussed future performing arts roles during a drama rehearsal just hours before his death.
Protesters’ Demands and Broader Issues
The Jantar Mantar protest featured participants carrying placards and chanting slogans calling for justice. Protesters voiced strong dissatisfaction with the official actions taken so far. One protesting parent critically stated that disciplinary measures, such as mere suspensions, were insufficient to address the gravity of the situation. Protesters collectively called for stronger deterrent actions to prevent similar tragedies affecting other students.
Another parent observed a growing disconnect between teachers and students. She emphasized that contemporary children face environments far more challenging than previous generations. Protesters highlighted the school’s fundamental responsibility to ensure students’ emotional safety within its premises. They advocated for systemic reforms to genuinely prioritize student mental health. Demands included establishing stricter rules to curb instances of teachers projecting personal frustrations onto students.
In a related development, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had previously issued a notice. This notice pertained to complaints of teacher harassment, directly linking to the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Government Response and Future Actions
In response to the incident and public outcry, the government has officially formed a high-level committee. Chandrasheel Dhawan, the student’s uncle, outlined specific expectations for this committee. He urged it to establish consistent, meaningful interaction protocols for teachers across all educational institutions. The objective is to equip educators with enhanced strategies and understanding for supporting children in today’s complex academic and social environments.
This incident and subsequent protest have intensified scrutiny on mental health support within educational institutions. It has also underscored the imperative for accountability regarding alleged school negligence. The community awaits the committee’s findings and any policy recommendations.
