CJI Surya Kant: Prioritize Collaboration and Integrity in Law Careers

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant advised graduating law students to prioritize collaboration and integrity in their careers. He spoke at the ninth convocation ceremony of Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) in Raipur on Sunday.

Core Message: Collaboration Over Competition

Justice Kant told students that the legal profession thrives on cooperation, not just competition. He noted that while law school emphasizes individual achievement, the actual practice of law requires teamwork.

He compared the justice system to a river. Justice is delivered through the combined efforts of many legal professionals. These include junior lawyers, senior advocates, colleagues, and even opposing counsel.

Future Colleagues and Adversaries

Students should treat their peers with respect. These classmates will become future colleagues. They may also become courtroom adversaries. Some may even join the judiciary.

Justice Kant shared a personal anecdote. He assisted a fellow lawyer early in his career without expecting anything in return. This built lasting professional trust and encouraged collaboration.

Long-Term Professional Growth

The CJI described the legal field as a “long-drawn game.” Authority and recognition develop gradually over decades. Early practice years may seem slow. This contrasts with other professions that appear to advance faster.

Foundational learning during this period is vital. This includes understanding court operations, legal reasoning, and client interaction. These elements are critical for long-term success.

Integrity Builds Respect

Students should not measure their progress by short timelines. Consistency, diligence, and integrity earn enduring respect. Justice Kant likened career development to building construction. Strong foundations are essential for future achievements.

He urged graduates to support each other. Maintaining connections within the professional community is important. Approach responsibilities seriously while balancing life.

Meeting with State Chief Minister

Following the convocation, Chief Justice Surya Kant met with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. The CM presented the CJI with a bouquet and a traditional ‘gamchha’. He also presented a coffee table book on the Bastar Dussehra festival and a replica depicting Lord Ram and Mata Shabari.
