CBSE Mandates Teacher Training on Student Mental Health

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated training for all school staff on student mental health. This directive stems from Supreme Court guidelines promoting student well-being and social-emotional learning. The training will occur at least twice annually.

Mandatory Staff Training

Certified mental health professionals will conduct the training. Sessions will cover psychological first aid, identifying warning signs, and response protocols for self-harm. Staff will learn referral mechanisms for students needing support.

An official statement indicated that all teaching, non-teaching, and administrative staff will receive training. This ensures they can interact with students sensitively and without discrimination.

Parent Sensitization Programs

Schools must also hold regular programs for parents. These sessions aim to reduce academic pressure on students. Parents will learn to recognize signs of psychological distress. They will be guided on empathetic and supportive responses.

Record Keeping and Reporting

Schools are required to maintain anonymous student records. An annual report must be prepared. This report will detail wellness interventions, student referrals, and mental health activities.

Review of School Practices

The CBSE mandates a review of school examination patterns. This review aims to foster student identity beyond academic scores. Prioritizing extra-curricular activities like sports and arts is also emphasized.

Mental health literacy, emotional regulation, and life skills education will be integrated into student orientation programs. Awareness of institutional support services is a key component.

Career Counselling Services

Schools will provide structured career counselling. Services will be available for students and their parents or guardians. Qualified counselors will lead these sessions.

The goal is to reduce unrealistic academic pressure. Awareness of diverse academic and professional pathways will be promoted. Students will receive assistance in making informed career decisions.
