CBSE Class 6: Third Language Policy Starts 2026

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will introduce a third language option for Class 6 students starting in the 2026-27 academic session . This change aligns with recommendations from the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023.

Third Language Implementation

Under the new policy, English will be classified as a “foreign” language if it is not the local or regional language. Students will be required to study at least two Indian languages alongside English or another foreign language option like French or German.

The NCFSE suggests introducing the third language between Classes 6 and 8. This period aims to develop basic interpersonal communication skills in the new language. The policy emphasizes that students should have sufficient time to learn the chosen language.

Language Policy Details

The three-language formula, part of NEP 2020, mandates students to learn three languages. At least two of these languages must be native to India. This policy applies to both government and private schools.

States have flexibility in choosing the specific languages offered. The policy also recommends that the primary medium of instruction should be the home language, mother tongue, local language, or regional language up to Class 5, and preferably up to Class 8 and beyond.

Future Implications

The introduction of the third language in Class 6 is intended to become mandatory for students up to Class 10 in the future. NCFSE also recommends continuing the study of all three languages through Classes 9 and 10.

Students taking the CBSE Class 10 board exams in 2031 will likely need to complete an examination in this third language. This move aims to promote multilingualism among students across India.
