Burdwan University Protest: SFI Scuffle Over Exam Delays

A scuffle erupted between police and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) activists outside Burdwan University on Friday. Protesters demanded faster student union elections and the release of semester exam results. Approximately 300 SFI activists attempted to breach police barricades. They aimed to enter the university campus in Purba Bardhaman district. Some protesters tried to scale the university gate.

Protest Details

Police prevented the students from crossing the barricades. The gathering disrupted vehicular movement. It also affected nearby office operations. An SFI protester stated their goal was to meet the vice chancellor or registrar. They intended to submit a memorandum of demands. These demands included immediate student union polls. They also called for timely publication of semester results.

Student Grievances

The protester highlighted persistent delays in result publication. “Every year, there is a delay in the publication of results despite holding the semester exams on time,” she said. This delay creates uncertainty for hundreds of students. SFI activists chanted slogans against university administration. They also targeted the state higher education department. They accused both of indifference to student issues.
