Bihar Universities to Offer Disaster Management Courses

Bihar’s Education Minister Sunil Kumar announced Tuesday that all state universities will be directed to incorporate disaster management courses into undergraduate curricula. The move aims to equip students with essential knowledge for responding to natural calamities. This initiative follows the inclusion of similar courses in state-run schools.

University Course Implementation

The Education Department will dispatch official letters to universities. These letters will instruct institutions to develop and introduce disaster management courses. The curriculum will be integrated at the undergraduate level. Universities must secure approval from their statutory committees and senates. This process is required before introducing the new courses.

Legislative Support for Disaster Education

CPI(M) MLA Ajay Kumar raised the issue in the assembly. He highlighted the finalization of model syllabi for certificate, foundation, and postgraduate diploma courses. Kumar urged immediate introduction of these courses. He emphasized their importance due to recurring natural disasters across Bihar.

Broader Educational Context

This directive aligns with recommendations from the University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC has previously advised higher education institutions to offer disaster management skill courses. These courses are intended for undergraduate students. The goal is to enhance preparedness and response capabilities within the student population.

Curriculum Development

Model syllabi for various levels of disaster management education are ready. These include certificate, foundation, and postgraduate diploma courses. Universities are expected to adapt these models. They will tailor content to address specific disaster risks prevalent in different regions of Bihar. This ensures relevance and practical application of the knowledge gained.
