Bengaluru: A 23-year-old dental student, Yashaswini, died by suicide at her residence in Bengaluru on Friday. Her family alleges that persistent harassment by college staff contributed directly to her death, sparking a police investigation and student protests.
The Incident
Police confirmed finding Yashaswini hanging at her home in Bengaluru. Yashaswini was a third-year student, specializing in oral medicine and radiology, at a local dental college. This tragic incident has prompted significant concern among the student community and calls for a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her passing.
Family Alleges Harassment
Yashaswini’s parents, Parimala and Bhudevaiah, have publicly stated their daughter faced systematic harassment from college management. Parimala, Yashaswini’s mother, has provided specific details regarding an alleged incident that occurred just days before her death. Yashaswini was reportedly the only child of her grieving parents.
According to her mother, Parimala, Yashaswini took a pre-approved leave from college on Wednesday due to severe eye pain. She returned to college the following day, Thursday, expecting to resume her studies. However, her return marked the beginning of an alleged incident of public humiliation.
Upon her return, Yashaswini faced alleged humiliation in front of other students for not participating in a seminar. This public chastisement occurred despite her medical leave. Parimala further stated that a specific lecturer actively prevented Yashaswini from taking part in the seminar proceedings. The lecturer then allegedly subjected her to harassment for not preparing and delivering a presentation, compounding her distress. The family firmly believes this repeated and public humiliation deeply affected Yashaswini, ultimately driving her to take the extreme step.
Student Protests Erupt
Following the tragic news of Yashaswini’s death and the immediate public allegations made by her family, fellow students quickly organized a sit-in protest. The demonstration took place outside the morgue where Yashaswini’s body was being held, drawing attention to the serious claims. Students expressed profound solidarity with Yashaswini’s grieving family and unequivocally condemned the alleged actions of the college administration.
Protesting students echoed the family’s accusations, asserting that Yashaswini was subjected to unacceptable levels of humiliation. They further claimed this relentless treatment forced her into a desperate situation, leading to her suicide. The students collectively demanded immediate accountability from the college administration regarding the alleged harassment and its role in the student’s death.
