Assam Merit Award: 11,250 Students Receive Scooters

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently distributed scooters to 11,250 meritorious students across the state. These students qualified by securing over 80 percent marks in their higher secondary examinations this year. The initiative falls under the state’s established Dr Banikanta Kakati Merit Award scheme, recognizing outstanding academic performance.

Of the total 11,250 recipients, 6,860 were girls, demonstrating a strong representation among female students. The remaining 4,390 students were boys. The award program serves as a key component in encouraging academic excellence and motivating students throughout Assam.

This year’s award distribution marks a notable change in the scheme’s scale. The number of beneficiaries decreased to 11,250 from 48,673 students last year. Chief Minister Sarma explained that this adjustment resulted from “small changes” in the award’s implementation criteria, focusing the recognition on specific achievement tiers.

Long-Term Scheme Impact and Future Initiatives

The Dr Banikanta Kakati Merit Award has consistently supported academic achievement over several years. Between the 2017-18 academic year and 2024-25, the Assam government has distributed a substantial total of 186,442 scooters through this scheme. The financial commitment for these awards has exceeded Rs 1,043 crore , highlighting the state’s investment in student recognition.

In addition to the scooter program, Assam operates the Nijut Moina scheme, which currently provides support to over 500,000 girls statewide. To further inspire and motivate male students in their studies, a new initiative, mirroring the objectives of Nijut Moina, is scheduled to launch on January 1 . This upcoming scheme aims to strengthen the overall academic environment and foster greater educational engagement across Assam.

Chief Minister’s Advice: Road Safety and Personal Development

During the distribution event, Chief Minister Sarma provided essential guidance to the student recipients. He underscored two critical “golden rules” for road safety. First, he instructed all students to obtain a valid driving license before operating their new scooters. Second, he emphasized the importance of consistently wearing a helmet every time they ride, ensuring personal safety.

Sarma also stressed the profound importance of cultivating a positive mindset for personal growth and academic success. He articulated that individuals who foster a positive outlook often develop strong self-confidence. Conversely, he cautioned that negativity can divert students from constructive paths and potentially lead to harmful influences, advocating for mental resilience and focus.

Expansion of Education and Healthcare Infrastructure

Assam has demonstrated significant progress and expansion across its education and public health sectors. The state now has over 25 medical colleges. Of these, 15 colleges are fully functional and actively admitting students, while another 10 are in various stages of construction, rapidly expanding the state’s medical training capacity.

The total number of medical seats available for aspiring doctors in Assam currently stands at 2,000 . Projections indicate a substantial increase, with this capacity expected to reach 5,000 by the year 2030 . This expansion is crucial for addressing the growing demand for healthcare professionals within the region.

Furthermore, Assam’s higher education landscape has undergone considerable development. The state now hosts two central universities . Additionally, between 25 to 26 state universities are either fully operational or actively under construction. The presence of approximately 30 engineering colleges , including nationally renowned institutions like IIT Guwahati and NIT Silchar , further strengthens the academic infrastructure. These comprehensive developments aim to reduce the need for students to seek advanced studies outside Assam, significantly enhancing local educational access and overall quality.
