Ashoka University has expanded its Psychology department. It now includes cognitive sciences. The university announced the change on September 19, 2023 . This move creates a more interdisciplinary approach to studying the mind. Nandini Chatterjee Singh is the new Head. She is a cognitive neuroscientist. The department is now named Psychology and Cognitive Sciences.
University Explains Expansion
The university stated the change follows an international trend. Psychology is becoming more data-driven. Cognitive science plays a larger role. It helps understand learning and decision-making. Singh noted psychology’s transformation. It shifted from description to empirical study. Cognitive science combines many fields. This provides a better understanding of the brain.
New Academic Focus
Students will still get a psychology foundation. The expanded department offers new study areas. These include neuroscience of learning. Behavioral change and brain health are also included. Cognitive science electives will be available. This will allow students to use analytical tools. They will work with real-world data.
Somak Raychaudhury is Ashoka University’s Vice-Chancellor. He said the initiative supports interdisciplinary learning. “Integrating cognitive science will enable students to better understand human behaviour through scientific, data-driven approaches,” Raychaudhury stated. The university plans to expand cognitive science offerings. This will depend on student interest. It will also consider academic development.
