AIMA: MAT Exam Now Skill-Focused, Online MBAs Expand Access

Rekha Sethi, Director General of the All India Management Association (AIMA), confirmed the Management Aptitude Test (MAT) now focuses on skills. She stated online MBA programs widen access because employers prioritize skills over degrees.

AIMA’s Evolving Role

AIMA adapts management education to align with a fast-changing economy and business landscape. It integrates technology into all management programs. AIMA also adds new specialization courses for current industry knowledge. The organization offers business simulations and games to train students and executives. It conducts conferences and overseas visits to update leaders on business and technology innovations.

MAT Exam Overview

The MAT exam provides exceptional flexibility, offering multiple attempts and test modes. Candidates can take the exam four times annually: February, May, September, and December . It supports both Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Paper-Based Test (PBT) options. AIMA launched MAT in 1988, and it has become a trusted entrance exam for MBA/PGDM admissions. Over 600 B-schools across India accept MAT scores. The Ministry of Education approved MAT as a national-level entrance examination in 2003. MAT pioneered human and AI-proctored Internet-Based Tests (IBT) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 30 lakh MBA aspirants have taken the MAT over decades.

MAT 2.0: Skill-Focused Refresh

AIMA refreshed MAT content and structure in 2024, positioning it as MAT 2.0 , a modern, skill-focused test. The updated exam includes a new section, ‘Economic & Business Environment’. This section covers current economic trends and technological interventions in business. MAT 2.0 features 30 questions in each of its five sections, totaling 150 questions. Aspirants must complete the exam within 120 minutes. MAT has also expanded its reach, with BITS Pilani, Dubai, now accepting the exam.

Rise of Online and Distance MBAs

Employers increasingly hire for skills and proven performance, not traditional degree completion. Online and distance MBAs broaden access for working professionals and other learners. These programs have gained credibility through AI and human-proctored exams. They include mandatory synchronous seminars, case-labs with graded participation, and capstones with external juries. Online viva-voce and plagiarism-safe assessment designs further enhance their standing. Industry-led and co-taught courses, along with frequent content revisions, ensure ongoing relevance.

Addressing Education Costs and Access

AIMA focuses on providing quality MBA education at affordable costs. It supports need-based student applications through partnerships with banks and financial institutions. AIMA offers opportunities to earn while learning through paid internships. The association provides a modular fee payment structure to ease financial burdens on students.

Integrating NEP 2020 Principles

AIMA designs and curates model curricula aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 . These curricula are multidisciplinary and skill-centric. AIMA maps programs to the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) and standardizes learning outcomes. It trains faculty in interdisciplinary design and experiential learning. The association also convenes industry councils to co-create micro-credentials and internship standards. It facilitates credit portability through MoUs across universities.

Technology and AI in Management

AIMA operates as a fully digitalized organization and offers technology-intensive management courses. It has started using AI for student services and teaching assistance. AIMA encourages students to use AI assistants for research and writing. Students must fact-check AI-generated output and avoid plagiarism. AI will transform job profiles but not eliminate the need for managers. Future leaders will manage teams composed of both people and AI systems, balancing human aspirations with AI decision-making.

Career Opportunities and Employability

AIMA maintains strong industry connections, generating career opportunities in high-demand sectors. These sectors include banking, financial services, IT/ITeS, e-commerce, healthcare, and manufacturing. Other key areas are supply chain, logistics, FMCG, retail, consulting, PSUs, SMEs, and startups. AIMA bridges the gap between academic learning and employability. It links learning outcomes with industry requirements. Education involves live industry projects with real data and capstones co-supervised by employers. AIMA embeds certifications (e.g., Lean Six Sigma, PM) into course credits. It provides extensive career services, including interview banks, case clubs, and alumni mentorship. Recruiters can access students’ verified body of work online.

Accreditation Importance

National accreditations, such as NAAC and NBA, along with ranking frameworks like NIRF, assure stakeholders of educational quality. National accreditation is crucial for Indian B-schools’ global legitimacy. International accreditations, including AACSB, add global comparability and enable international partnerships. The strongest educational institutions often hold both national and international accreditations. Triple accreditation bodies like AACSB/EQUIS/AMBA use NBA data for regulatory fit and global benchmarking.
