Indore: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday demanded nationwide student union elections across all Indian universities. The organization stated these elections would foster new leadership from higher education campuses.
Call for Elections
ABVP national general secretary Virendra Singh Solanki confirmed the demand. Solanki stated that student union elections must occur in Madhya Pradesh by 2026. He added that the organization had communicated this demand to both the Central and state governments. Solanki emphasized that student union elections help develop new leaders, benefiting society.
The ABVP, an organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), possesses approximately 77 lakh members.
Addressing Concerns
Solanki addressed concerns that student union elections might disrupt academic environments. He acknowledged that some governments fear such incidents. However, Solanki argued that administrations must implement adequate measures to prevent disorder.
He questioned why Madhya Pradesh authorities consider themselves unprepared to conduct elections. Solanki noted that prestigious institutions like Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University hold student union elections. He reiterated the ABVP’s firm demand for elections in Madhya Pradesh by 2026.
Electoral Roll Revision and National Song Commemoration
Responding to a query, Solanki affirmed the importance of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This process, currently underway in various states and Union Territories, aims to purify voter lists. The ABVP is actively raising public awareness about this exercise.
Furthermore, the ABVP plans a national initiative to commemorate 150 years since the composition of ‘Vande Mataram’. Solanki announced that the organization would arrange collective singing of the national song in every educational campus across the country.
