The Indian Nursing Council (INC) has withdrawn national accreditation for 24 nursing institutions across Kerala. The colleges lost their recognition for failing to undergo mandatory inspections for several years. The INC declared these institutions unsuitable for offering nursing programs.
Institutions Deemed Unsuitable
The INC requested recommendations on college suitability from the state government and the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council (KNMC) in November 2024. No feedback was received from either body. This lack of response contributed to the decision to cancel recognition.
Impact on Students
Students who graduate from these 24 derecognized institutions will face limitations. They can only register as nurses within Kerala. Registration in other states will not be permitted, according to an INC statement.
Affected Institutions and Courses
The affected colleges offer a range of nursing qualifications. These include Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM), General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM), Bachelor of Science (BSc) Nursing, Master of Science (MSc) Nursing, Post Basic BSc Nursing, and Nurse Practitioner in Critical Care (NPCC) courses. The colleges are located in districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, Kannur, Wayanad, Thrissur, Kollam, Kozhikode, and Idukki.
