13,076 PM SHRI Schools Established in 3 Years; UP Leads

The Ministry of Education announced the establishment of 13,076 PM SHRI schools across 33 states and union territories. These schools have been set up over the last three years. Uttar Pradesh leads all states with 1,725 PM SHRI schools.

Scheme Overview

The PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) scheme was approved by the Cabinet on September 7, 2022 . It is a centrally sponsored initiative. The scheme aims to upgrade and develop existing schools into model institutions. It focuses on providing quality education and modern infrastructure.

A seven-phase selection process identified the schools. Institutions from state and union territory governments were selected. Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS), and NCERT institutions also participate in the scheme.

Infrastructure Upgrades

The scheme targets comprehensive improvements in school infrastructure. Primary and elementary schools received specific enhancements. These include features like “Bala Feature” and “Jaadui Pitara.” Support also covers pre-school education, child-friendly furniture, and outdoor play materials.

For secondary and senior secondary schools, upgrades include new furniture and fully equipped integrated science labs. These labs cover physics, chemistry, and biology. Schools also gained smart classrooms, computer labs, or ICT labs. Skill labs and playgrounds with sports facilities were also established.

Rural and Urban Distribution

Out of the total 13,076 PM SHRI schools, 9,373 are located in rural areas . The remaining 4,003 schools serve urban regions across the country.

Green School Initiatives

PM SHRI schools incorporate environmental sustainability as ‘green schools’. They promote energy efficiency using solar panels and LED lighting. Nutrition gardens with natural farming methods are also part of the initiative. Schools implement waste management systems and aim to be plastic-free. Water conservation and awareness for an organic lifestyle are also key components.

State-wise Establishment and Challenges

The distribution of PM SHRI schools varies by state and year of establishment. Uttar Pradesh holds the highest number, followed by Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. While the scheme expands nationwide, some states have reported implementation challenges. For instance, reports indicate that Tamil Nadu government schools have faced issues such as frozen Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) funds and staffing shortages. These challenges impact scheme efforts in certain regions.
