About This Scholarship

The CERC Migration Journalism Fellowship 2025 is an initiative by the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migration and Integration at Toronto Metropolitan University. This prestigious fellowship aims to empower journalists in producing high-quality, research-informed stories focusing on crucial topics such as migration, diversity, and immigrant integration.

Selected fellows will receive a grant to support their proposed journalism projects, along with access to CERC Migration’s research, data, and expertise. This grant is designed to facilitate in-depth reporting and enhance public understanding of complex migration issues through compelling storytelling.

The application deadline for this fellowship is 1 November 2025. Candidates will be selected based on the quality and originality of their proposed project, its relevance to migration, integration, and diversity themes, demonstrated journalistic ability, and the feasibility of completing the project within the fellowship period.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the CERC Migration Journalism Fellowship 2025, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

• Be an early or mid-career journalist, working either freelance or employed by a media organization.
• Possess a minimum of 5 years of professional media experience.
• Demonstrate substantial prior experience in reporting on migration, immigration, diversity, or related societal issues.
• Be capable of successfully completing the proposed journalism project within the designated fellowship period.
• Submit a clear and compelling proposal for a journalism project. This project must specifically focus on themes related to migration, diversity, or immigrant integration.

Required Documents

• A fully completed application form.
• A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV) outlining professional experience, education, and relevant journalistic achievements.
• A detailed project proposal. This proposal should clearly articulate the story idea, the proposed journalistic approach, and a realistic timeline for completing the project.
• Samples of previous journalistic work. These samples should ideally showcase experience in reporting on migration or related topics.
• References or letters of support from professional contacts who can attest to the applicant's journalistic abilities and suitability for the fellowship.
