Odisha: Five Students Drown in Separate Incidents

Five school students drowned in separate incidents in Odisha’s Koraput and Mayurbhanj districts on Saturday. Three Class 10 students drowned in the Kolab reservoir. Two Class 2 students drowned in a pond.

Koraput Drowning Incident

Three Class 10 students drowned in the backwaters of the Kolab reservoir Saturday afternoon. The students had completed their board examinations. They were celebrating exam completion near their school’s hostel.

Lingaraj Khil, 16; Swastik, 15; and Om Prakash, 16, were pronounced dead at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital. Police suspect the incident occurred between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Investigations are ongoing.

Family members of the deceased have alleged negligence by the school. They are demanding a thorough investigation.

Mayurbhanj Drowning Incident

In Mayurbhanj district, two Class 2 students drowned in a pond near Nachhipur village. The incident occurred in the Kaptipada police station area.

Subhasandhya Nayak, 7, and Rajalaxmi Sankhual, 8, were classmates. They reportedly went to the pond after returning from school. Relatives pulled them from the water and took them to Kaptipada hospital.

Doctors declared the girls dead upon arrival at the hospital. Kaptipada police are investigating the incident.
