ITI Training: 150 Hours OJT Now Mandatory

The Directorate General of Training (DGT) now requires 150 hours of on-the-job training (OJT) or a group project for all Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students. This change applies to the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS) starting the 2022-23 academic session . The new rule aims to connect classroom learning with real industrial needs.

Mandatory Practical Training

ITI trainees must complete at least three months of ITI training before starting their OJT or project work. Industrial mentors will guide this practical experience. Trainees’ performance will be evaluated through mentor feedback, log books, and viva voce. These marks will appear on their official mark sheets.

This initiative adjusts the total annual training hours. Previously 1,600 hours, it is now reduced to 1,200 hours. This reduction allows for structured, industry-integrated learning. Trainees unable to participate in OJT will complete a trade-specific group project. This project will count towards their practical assessment.

Government Statement

Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, stated the reform enhances vocational education quality. He noted that real workplace experience builds practical skills, confidence, and professionalism. State directorates and training centers must collaborate with industries. They will arrange quality OJT opportunities. This includes ensuring safety and travel provisions for trainees in remote areas.

Students in the Dual System of Training (DST) will undertake project work instead of OJT. The DGT believes this reform aligns ITI training with current industry demands. It strengthens the Skill India Mission. This ensures young people are better prepared for stable employment.
