Delhi police arrested 14 students following a protest march at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Among those detained were three office bearers of the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU). The arrests occurred after students attempted to march towards the education ministry.
Student Arrests and Charges
The 14 arrested students include JNUSU president Aditi Mishra, vice president Gopika Babu, and joint secretary Danish Ali. They were presented before a Judicial magistrate at Patiala House Court. Three JNUSU members and former president Nitish Kumar were sent to Tihar jail.
First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered. Charges include assault or criminal force, obstructing a public servant, and voluntarily causing hurt under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Vasant Kunj North Police Station filed the reports.
Police allege that protesters threw sticks and shoes. They also claim students resorted to physical assault. Several police officers sustained injuries, with some reporting being bitten during the incident.
Reasons for Protest
The JNU protest march was part of ongoing demonstrations. The students were protesting remarks made by JNU vice-chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit. The protest also addressed the implementation of UGC regulations and the rustication of JNUSU office bearers. The proposed Rohith Act was another key issue.
Detention and Allegations
A total of 51 protesters were initially detained. This number included Mishra and Kumar. Police stated these students engaged in physical assault, injuring officers.
Protesters were stopped at heavily barricaded university gates. This led to a confrontation between students and police. The JNUSU released a statement accusing police of excessive force. They claimed 13 students, including three office bearers, were taken into custody. The union also alleged students were attacked and injured. A portrait of B.R. Ambedkar was reportedly damaged during the police action.
University Administration’s Stance
The JNU administration stated the students lacked permission for an external protest. They advised students to protest within university premises. Police confirmed this information.
JNUSU Demands
The JNUSU has called for the immediate release of all detained students. They demand the resignation of the vice-chancellor. The union also seeks disciplinary action against police officers. They want the withdrawal of proctorial measures and FIRs filed against student activists.
The JNU Teachers Association (JNUTA) previously condemned the police intervention. JNU plans an all-India protest against the VC on February 28.
