The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) removed its Class 8 Social Science textbook from public access following a Supreme Court ban. The court ordered the immediate halt of the book’s circulation. This action stems from concerns over content in a chapter titled “The Role of the Judiciary in our Society.” The book is no longer available on NCERT’s digital platform. Sales and re-printing of all physical copies have also stopped. Sharing the book in any form is now considered serious non-compliance.
Supreme Court Mandates Investigation
The Supreme Court directed the NCERT Director to identify officials involved in creating the controversial chapter. The court also requested minutes from meetings where the chapter was discussed and approved. These documents are due at the next hearing. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated the content was malicious. He argued it damages public faith in the judiciary. The Chief Justice warned that unchecked content could be deemed criminal contempt.
NCERT Acknowledges Error and Plans Revision
NCERT called the error “purely unintentional.” The council acknowledged the issues raised about the chapter. It confirmed the textbook content will be altered. The council announced the chapter will be rewritten. This revision will occur with consultation from appropriate authorities. The updated chapter will be available to Class 8 students at the start of the 2026-27 academic session . NCERT stated its objective is strengthening constitutional literacy and respect for institutions. It emphasized no intent to undermine any constitutional body’s authority.
