A portable cabin classroom ceiling collapsed at Dyal Singh College, Delhi University, on Wednesday. The incident occurred during a class. No injuries were reported, according to college officials.
Ceiling Collapse Details
The gypsum panel ceiling fell in classroom number 36. A sixth-semester BA History class was in progress at the time. Students reported the cabin was not in good condition.
College Infrastructure Issues
College authorities cited aging infrastructure for the collapse. Many classes currently operate from porta cabins. Principal VK Paliwal confirmed the issue.
“Many of the porta cabins are old,” Paliwal stated. “It’s hard to ascertain their current conditions.” He added that efforts are underway to improve college infrastructure. The college has signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for development.
Student and Faculty Concerns
Teachers noted a serious need for new buildings. The student population is high. College infrastructure is reportedly in poor condition.
Redevelopment projects have been stalled for years. “The college building construction was supposed to be completed in 2018-2019,” a professor said anonymously. “It is still incomplete.” The college has paid fines for delays. Infrastructure upgrades remain unaddressed.
