IIT Madras Prof Joins UN AI Scientific Panel

Professor B Ravindran of IIT Madras has been appointed to a United Nations scientific panel on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The announcement was made by the research institution on Tuesday. Ravindran is the Head of the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI. He also leads the Centre for Responsible Artificial Intelligence (CeRAI) at IIT Madras.

UN AI Panel Established

The Independent International Scientific Panel on AI was established by a UN General Assembly Resolution in August 2025. It functions as a global scientific body for AI. The panel comprises leading experts. These experts come from diverse regions and academic disciplines. Their role is to assess AI’s impact on lives and societies worldwide.

IIT Madras Director’s Statement

IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti expressed pride in Ravindran’s appointment. He stated the panel will be important for AI’s positive global impact. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi. He announced the panel’s appointment. Guterres stated that 40 leading experts will join. He emphasized that AI must be for everyone. He urged Member States and civil society to contribute to the panel’s work.

Professor Ravindran’s Perspective

Professor Ravindran commented on his appointment. He called AI a generational technology. He noted its broad impact on people’s lives. He stated this happens both knowingly and unknowingly. The UN has formed an international panel of experts. They will examine AI’s far-reaching implications. Ravindran feels honored to represent India. He also sees it as representing the voice of the Global South on the panel.
