Jadavpur University Student Assaulted After Fresher’s Event

KOLKATA – A postgraduate student at Jadavpur University was allegedly assaulted on campus Monday evening. The incident occurred after a freshers’ programme. The student, identified as Priyam Chatterjee, is in the first year of the English department’s postgraduate program.

Assault and Campus Tension

University sources claim Chatterjee was taken from the freshers’ event venue. Members of a group called ‘Collective (DSF)’ allegedly dragged him away. The assault reportedly happened near the Faculty of Engineering & Technology department. Chatterjee later fell unconscious.

Professors intervened. They rescued Chatterjee and brought him to the administrative building, Aurobindo Bhavan. This building houses key university offices, including the Vice-Chancellor’s office. Tension increased when the same group allegedly surrounded Aurobindo Bhavan. They blocked entry and exit for a period.

Student Admitted to Hospital

Following faculty intervention, Chatterjee was taken to KPC Medical College and Hospital. He is receiving treatment there. The student’s condition is described as critical by sources.

Alleged Retaliation and Investigation

A leader from the SFI student union claimed another incident occurred. An economics department student was reportedly harassed separately. This leader linked the attacks to a February 20 clash. That incident involved SFI and We The Independent (WTI) members. Several students and two professors were injured then.

Jadavpur University’s Vice-Chancellor’s office has not yet released an official statement. Investigations into the assault and subsequent events are ongoing.
