Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has fined seven students from Koyna Hostel for sharing mess food. The university administration issued a notice on Saturday , stating the students violated Hostel Manual provisions. This action has led to protests from the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF).
Hostel Administration’s Notice
The notice, dated Saturday, identified students allegedly transferring or selling their allotted mess food. JNU authorities deemed this a violation of rules concerning impersonation and misuse of mess facilities. The Hostel Manual prohibits these actions. Fines were imposed on the seven students. They must deposit the penalty within seven days .
Further violations carry stricter penalties. The university warned that future infractions could result in a First Information Report (FIR) being filed. The official order stated, “Impersonation, i.e. eating or signing the Diet Register for a bona fide student, is prohibited.” It also said, “the defaulter will be dealt with as per norms, including lodging an FIR for the offence.”
Student Federation Response
The Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) disputes the university’s action. In a statement, the DSF claimed the students had paid for their meals. They were reportedly sharing food with friends. The federation called the fines and FIR warning “unjustified.”
The DSF labeled the penalty excessive. The group demanded the withdrawal of the notices. They also called for the scrapping of the hostel manual, describing it as “anti-student.” JNU authorities have not yet provided an immediate response to the DSF’s statement.
