IIT Madras Global Research Foundation (IITM Global) and Malaysia’s Johor Corporation (JCorp) plan to establish an applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in Johor. An agreement of understanding was signed recently to explore the feasibility of this center. The initiative aims to drive industry-led AI innovation and ensure responsible technology deployment.
Applied AI Hub Planned for Johor
The proposed center will focus on translating advanced AI research into practical industry applications. Key areas include developing responsible AI frameworks, building talent, conducting applied research, offering executive education, and supporting startups. Partners will also create testbeds and pilot projects in Johor to speed up AI solution adoption across various sectors. This move aligns with recent India-Malaysia discussions on expanding digital technology cooperation.
Strengthening India-Malaysia Tech Ties
Officials view this as a step to build a stronger innovation link between Southeast Asia and India. Johor Corporation stated the partnership supports its goal of developing new growth sectors and globally competitive technology ecosystems. IITM Global sees Malaysia as a key international partner. Thirumalai Madhavnarayan, CEO of IITM Global, highlighted Malaysia’s strategic importance and the plan to commercialize AI research. The collaboration supports Malaysia’s digital transformation goals and aims to foster innovation-led economies and talent growth in the region.
If realized, the center is expected to enhance research collaboration and drive economic growth through innovation. It will further strengthen technology ties between India and Malaysia.
