Meghalaya Student Wins Award for Smart Gas Leak Detector

A Class 9 student from Meghalaya developed a smart gas leak detector and received a jury award at the North East Science Fair & Innovation Festival. James Donald Kharkongor, a student at Mawngap District Christian Multipurpose HS School, was recognized for his invention on Sunday. Officials confirmed the award. The festival was organized by the National Science Centre, Guwahati.

Smart Gas Leak Detector Wins Award

Kharkongor’s system monitors air quality for gas leaks. It activates an alarm and an exhaust fan when gas levels rise. The device also automatically shuts off the gas supply. This prevents further leaks and reduces fire hazards.

The system uses gas sensors. It continuously checks air quality. A buzzer sounds if gas concentration exceeds safe limits. An automated exhaust fan disperses accumulated gas. This lowers ignition risks.

A key feature is a solenoid valve. It shuts off gas supply upon leak detection. This minimizes fire and explosion risks. The system connects to the internet. This allows remote monitoring and real-time alerts.

Innovation and Motivation

James Donald Kharkongor comes from Laitpynter Synrangkaban village. His father is a teacher. His mother works as a housekeeper. Kharkongor stated his motivation. “I want to contribute my ideas to help build the nation,” he said.

The award recognized the project’s practical use. It also noted its technical integration. The potential societal impact was considered. Officials confirmed these points.

Mentorship and Support

The Innovation Hub at the Shillong Science Centre mentored Kharkongor. He received hands-on training. He also got technical guidance. Exposure to scientific platforms was provided.
