The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will implement on-screen marking (OSM) for all Class 12 answer scripts starting in the academic year 2026 . Class 10 answer sheets will continue to be evaluated manually.
On-Screen Marking for Class 12 Exams
This change impacts the evaluation of approximately 46 lakh students annually who take CBSE board exams. The shift to digital evaluation aims to improve efficiency, transparency, and speed in the marking process.
The CBSE Class 12 board exams are scheduled to begin on February 17, 2026 , and conclude on April 10, 2026 . Class 10 exams will run from February 17 to March 11, 2026.
Benefits of the New System
According to a CBSE circular issued on February 9, OSM is expected to reduce common errors and delays associated with manual checking. The board identified ten key benefits of the new system.
These benefits include eliminating totalling errors, reducing manual coordination, and enabling faster evaluation. Teachers can participate in marking from their schools, eliminating travel requirements and saving time and transportation costs. This also allows teachers to continue their regular duties without interruption.
The board stated that post-result verification of marks will no longer be necessary, reducing the need for manpower in verification processes. The OSM system also offers schools, including those abroad, an opportunity to participate in the evaluation. CBSE described this as an “environmentally sustainable digital evaluation.”
Preparation and Requirements for Schools
To facilitate the smooth rollout of on-screen marking, CBSE has outlined specific digital infrastructure requirements for schools. These include:
- A computer lab with a public static IP.
- Personal computers or laptops running Windows OS 8 or higher.
- Minimum of 4 GB RAM and 1 GB free storage space on devices.
- An updated internet browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox).
- Adobe Reader installed.
- Reliable internet connectivity with a minimum speed of 2 Mbps.
- An uninterrupted power supply.
CBSE noted that these requirements are already part of the board’s affiliation by-laws. The board plans to conduct multiple dry runs, organize training programs, and release instructional videos. A dedicated call center will be established to address technical issues.
Teachers will be able to log in using their OASIS IDs to familiarize themselves with the new system. CBSE will also provide support to ensure a seamless transition to the on-screen marking method for Class 12 examinations.
