IIT Madras has launched a new Bachelor of Science (BS) program in Aeronautics and Space Technology. The course is open to students who have completed Class 12 or an equivalent qualification, including diploma holders. There is no enrollment cap and no IIT-JEE entrance exam is required.
Program Details
The online program aims to equip students with analytical and design skills for aeronautics, space systems, and related fields. Learners can progress at their own pace. This flexibility suits working professionals, students pursuing other degrees, or individuals seeking a primary undergraduate qualification.
Exams will be held on Sundays. Assessments will be a mix of center-based and online proctored formats. The program is designed for undergraduate study.
Curriculum and Opportunities
The BS-level course focuses on designing aircraft and spacecraft. It prepares students for industrial research and development roles. It also provides a path for higher education.
Top diploma performers may be invited for on-campus preparation. High scorers can join MS programs. This is possible without GATE scores if CGPA criteria are met.
Core theory courses utilize recorded lectures from faculty. Live interactive tutorials and online discussion forums provide additional support.
Director’s Statement
IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti stated that aeronautics and space technology are rapidly growing sectors. These areas require specialized personnel. He described the BS program as an effort to democratize opportunities in these fields.
Flexibility and Skill Gaps
In line with the National Education Policy (NEP), the program offers multiple exit points. Students can exit at foundation, diploma, or BS degree levels. This allows learners to align their path with their skills and career goals.
The curriculum addresses skill gaps in unmanned aerial vehicles, civil aviation, and space technologies. IIT Madras will provide placement and internship support through the Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE). This aims to enhance employability.
Laboratory Exposure
On-campus laboratory courses offer exposure to advanced experimental facilities. This includes wind tunnels and mechanical testing equipment.
