IIT Kharagpur, Oil India Partner for Biogas Plant

IIT Kharagpur and Oil India Limited have signed an agreement to establish a compressed biogas (CBG) plant at the institute. The pact was finalized recently at the India Energy Week in Goa. This collaboration aims to convert biodegradable waste into clean biogas for energy and nutrient-rich manure for agriculture.

Biogas Plant Project

The new plant will process waste materials found on campus. The generated biogas can power various applications. The manure produced will support agricultural activities. This project addresses urban waste management issues. It also targets reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Soil health improvement is another key objective.

IIT Kharagpur aims to become a national model for circular economy principles. The initiative focuses on waste-to-wealth generation. It integrates scientific research with practical implementation. The project is designed as a “living laboratory.” This space will encourage research and innovation. It will also foster skill development and entrepreneurship.

Project Goals

IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty stated the partnership creates a comprehensive ecosystem. This ecosystem connects research, sustainability, and real-world application. The goal is to develop a replicable waste-to-wealth model. This model could be adopted by urban areas across India and the Global South. It seeks to transform waste from a problem into a resource.
