JNU Rusticates 5 PhD Scholars Over Library Vandalism

Five Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) PhD scholars, including four JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) office-bearers, have been rusticated for two semesters. The university found them guilty of vandalizing Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) access gates at the Dr B R Ambedkar Central Library on November 21, 2025 . Each student received a Rs 20,000 fine .

Scholars Barred from Campus

The affected students are Kizhakoot Gopika Babu, Aditi Mishra, Sunil Yadav, Danish Ali, and Nitish Kumar. They are now prohibited from entering the campus. Suspension letters confirm their immediate removal from university grounds.

Incident Details and Findings

University proctorial inquiry letters detail the event. The students reportedly ignored security personnel. They forcibly removed cameras and camera stands from the FRT machines.

Inquiry findings identified JNUSU president Aditi Mishra and Vice-president Gopika Babu as leaders of the vandalism. Joint secretary Danish Ali and Nitish Kumar allegedly dismantled library panels. Gopika Babu is specifically cited for standing on dismantled panels and delivering a provocative speech. She also allegedly raised slogans, disrupting library operations.

Injuries and Equipment Damage

The university stated two female security guards sustained injuries resulting in blood loss during the incident. The vandalized FRT system cost approximately Rs 20 lakh to install.

University Statute Violated

The students were found guilty under the University’s Statute. This statute addresses acts of violence, property damage, and disruption of academic functioning. The rustication period covers the Winter and Monsoon semesters of 2026 .

Hostel Warnings and Fine Payment

JNU warned that providing shelter to rusticated students in campus hostels would result in disciplinary action. Students must deposit the Rs 20,000 fine within ten days . A receipt must be submitted to the Chief Proctor’s Office.
