The Delhi government has significantly increased the budget for its Narela Education City project to Rs 1,300 crore . This allocation marks a substantial rise from the initial Rs 500 crore . Education Minister Ashish Sood announced the decision, detailing plans to transform Narela into a world-class education and innovation hub. The project aims to strengthen higher and technical education across the national capital, fostering a future-ready learning environment.
Concrete steps for the project’s development are underway. Possession letters for key land parcels were recently handed over at Raj Niwas. Delhi Teachers’ University received 12.69 acres for its campus, while Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University secured 22.43 acres . These allocations were made in the presence of the Lieutenant Governor. Earlier, Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW) had already been allotted 50 acres . These combined land assignments contribute to developing a comprehensive education and innovation hub spread over nearly 160 acres in Narela.
Project Funding Details
The project was initially sanctioned with an outlay of Rs 500 crore . The Delhi government enhanced this allocation to Rs 1,300 crore in the latest budget. This increase accounts for future development requirements. Payment to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for land allotment has also been expedited. The government has already paid approximately Rs 462 crore . The remaining amount will be cleared within the current financial year.
Shared Campus and Infrastructure
Narela Education City will not be limited to individual university buildings. It will be developed as a shared campus based on global best practices. Common facilities will be created for optimal resource use and wider student access. These include modern libraries, advanced laboratories, seminar halls, and auditoriums. Research and innovation centers are also planned. Residential facilities for faculty and staff are part of the project. These include LIG, MIG, HIG, and EWS flats within the university campuses. Various universities have proposed investments of about Rs 567 crore . This funding is for the construction of flats, hostels, and related infrastructure. International consultants and scientific studies guide the project’s planning and execution.
Strategic Importance and Employment
Narela holds strategic importance for the city’s development. Work on the Rithala-Narela Metro corridor is currently underway. This improved connectivity is expected to stimulate overall development in the surrounding areas. The establishment of these universities will generate significant employment opportunities. These include both direct and indirect jobs. Teaching and non-teaching positions will be created. Jobs in hostel services and allied activities will also emerge.
