IITs Redesign MTech, PhD Programs: Focus on AI & Industry

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will redesign their MTech and PhD programs. The IIT Council, the apex coordination body for the 23 IITs, made this decision in a meeting held in August 2023 . The revamp focuses on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), increasing industry collaboration, and promoting global research.

Officials stated that current MTech and PhD program opportunities are underutilized. The Council seeks to reshape engineering education within the next 2-3 years, considering AI’s impact on curriculum, teaching methods, assessment, and research across all IITs.

MTech Program Changes

The IIT Council has directed all IITs to revamp their MTech curriculum within one year . This reform addresses key issues: limited specializations and a lack of internship opportunities, which discourage B.Tech graduates from pursuing MTech programs in India, according to meeting minutes.

  • Mandatory Internships: Industry internships will become a compulsory component of MTech programs.
  • Dual-Track MTech: A new dual-track system will be introduced. One track focuses on industry engagement, and the other on research.
  • Multidisciplinary Programs: IITs will offer more multidisciplinary MTech options.
  • Blended Mode Programs: Increased availability of blended learning MTech programs.
  • Product-Based MTech: Introduction of product-based MTech programs that do not require publishing academic papers.

PhD Program Enhancements

IIT PhD programs aim to become stronger engines of innovation and global competitiveness. IIT Ropar proposed comprehensive doctoral education reforms to tackle issues such as long PhD durations, administrative delays, limited mentorship, and under-utilized infrastructure.

Key changes for PhD programs include:

  • Project-First PhD Model: This model emphasizes structured timelines, predefined research goals, and industry collaboration.
  • Networked PhD Programs: To foster interdisciplinary research and global exposure, IITs will establish networked PhD programs among themselves and with international universities.
  • Doctoral Academies: Each IIT will create a doctoral academy to support mentorship, career development, and international engagement. These academies will be supported by upgraded infrastructure and digital labs.

Monitoring and Implementation

All IITs must set up internal committees. These committees will survey the quality of incoming PhD students, improve PhD administration processes, and map program outcomes. IITs must also monitor faculty performance and dedication in PhD guidance. Future PhD student assignments will consider this performance.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) will form a sub-committee. This sub-committee will propose a detailed framework to further promote product-based PhDs within IITs. The committee must present its framework to the Chairman of the IIT Council within one month of its constitution.

JEE Advanced Exam Review

During the same meeting, the IIT Council also discussed making the JEE Advanced exam adaptive. This adaptive test would dynamically generate and adjust questions in real-time based on the candidate’s ability. The goal is to create a more effective assessment.
