IIT Madras Saarang Cultural Festival Set for January 8-12

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras will host its 52nd annual Saarang cultural festival from January 8 to 12 on campus. The event is one of India’s largest cultural festivals, with an expected attendance of over 80,000 visitors.

This year’s festival, themed ‘Beyond Realms’, features new initiatives, returning flagship events, and a social outreach program. It will include competitions, workshops, exhibitions, and performances, drawing students, artists, and audiences from across the country.

Festival Highlights

Saarang 2024 introduces several new attractions and revives popular events. An official IIT Madras press release detailed these additions:

  • Non-Competitive Cluster: Features open performances and interactive acts.
  • Nova Experience Zone: Debuts as a relaxed, open-access space inspired by early-2000s pop culture.
  • Saarang Parade: Returns, transforming the campus into a moving cultural spectacle.
  • Saarang General Championship (GC): Revived after a hiatus, encouraging colleges to compete across multiple events.

Social Campaign: Kalaa

Saarang also launched its social campaign, ‘Kalaa’. This initiative aims to support traditional artists and empower underprivileged communities through sustainable handicraft opportunities. Kalaa has partnered with various organizations and NGOs for digital outreach efforts.

The campaign conducted awareness sessions in local schools, focusing on ancient South Indian art forms. It also created on-campus marketplaces for handmade products. Kalaa has raised over Rs 20,000 . These funds will be distributed to partner organizations to support their ongoing work.

The festival’s Professional Shows conclude each day of Saarang. Padma Shri Awardee Sri Thota Tharani will inaugurate the five-day festival as chief guest. Tharani is known for his contributions to set design and visual storytelling in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema.
