Tripura Schools Close Jan 6-10 Due to Severe Cold Wave

AGARTALA, Tripura – All schools across Tripura will remain closed for five days, from January 6 to January 10, 2024 . Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the decision on Monday. The closure addresses severe cold weather conditions currently affecting the northeastern state.

This directive applies broadly to all educational institutions. It includes government schools, government-aided schools, and privately managed schools throughout Tripura. The action aims to ensure student safety and well-being during a significant cold wave.

Impact of Cold Wave

Tripura has experienced a persistent cold wave over the past week. This weather pattern has brought abnormally low temperatures to the region. An official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Agartala centre confirmed the severity of the cold. Minimum temperatures have dropped by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius below what is normal for this time of year.

Partha Roy, who heads the IMD Agartala Centre, further elaborated on the situation. He stated that the intense chill felt across Tripura directly stems from this ongoing cold wave. Such prolonged deviations from normal temperatures can pose health challenges, especially for young students.

Current and Future Temperature Readings

Detailed meteorological observations highlight the extent of the cold snap. On Monday, the state recorded a maximum temperature of only 16.8 degrees Celsius . This figure represents a considerable decrease, approximately 8.6 degrees Celsius below the usual maximum temperature expected for the season.

The IMD forecasts a continuation of these cold conditions. Residents should anticipate low temperatures persisting for at least the next three days. This sustained cold necessitates precautions for all citizens, particularly children and the elderly.

In addition to the cold, weather patterns include shallow to moderate fog. This fog is predicted for night and early morning hours. It may affect several areas within the state over the next two days, potentially reducing visibility for commuters and pedestrians.

Specific temperature predictions for Tuesday offer a glimpse into the immediate forecast. The maximum temperature is very likely to be around 18 degrees Celsius , with the minimum temperature expected to be around 12 degrees Celsius . These figures reinforce the expectation of continued cool conditions.

The decision to close schools reflects a proactive measure by the state government. It prioritizes public health and safety, providing a necessary break for students during this period of unusually harsh winter weather. The closure ensures that students do not face the risks associated with exposure to extreme cold while commuting or attending classes.
