Punjab: 61,281 Government Jobs Since 2022, CM Mann Emphasizes Merit

CHANDIGARH – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the state government has provided 61,281 government jobs since April 2022. Mann affirmed the recruitment process prioritizes merit, transparency, and fairness in public service. On Saturday, the Chief Minister underscored this commitment by handing appointment letters to 606 new recruits for the education department during a ceremony here.

Education Department Appointments

The 606 individuals receiving appointment letters mark a new phase in their careers within Punjab’s education sector. This group includes:

  • 385 special educator teachers
  • 157 primary teachers
  • 8 principals
  • 56 employees recruited on compassionate grounds

Chief Minister Mann stated that every one of the 61,281 appointments since April 2022 has been made strictly on merit. He noted that not a single appointment has faced a legal challenge in court. Mann criticized previous state governments, asserting they failed to respect merit and competence. Instead, he claimed, past administrations distributed government jobs among favoured individuals. Mann emphasized his administration has established a system where youth receive jobs based solely on their capability.

Focus on Special Needs Education

A key reform in the education sector includes the creation of a separate cadre for special educator teachers . This cadre specifically addresses the needs of children with special needs in government schools across Punjab. Approximately 48,000 children with special needs are currently enrolled in these schools. The appointment of 385 teachers under this special cadre aims to help these children develop skills at both primary and secondary levels. Addressing the newly appointed special educator teachers, Mann stated, “Your duty is not only to educate these children but also to serve humanity.” He urged them to carry out this responsibility with dedication.

Investing in Teacher Training and School Infrastructure

The Punjab government is implementing initiatives to elevate the quality of education by investing in teacher training and school infrastructure. These programs include:

  • Global Training for Educators: 234 principals and education officers have received training in Singapore.
  • Leadership Development: 249 head teachers completed training at IIM Ahmedabad.
  • Primary Education Enhancement: 216 primary teachers trained at Turku University in Finland.

Regarding infrastructure, the state is establishing 118 ‘Schools of Eminence’ . These institutions are designed to provide improved educational opportunities for underprivileged children. Furthermore, the government provides free uniforms to students. A free bus service has been launched for girls to ensure no girl is deprived of education due to transportation issues.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains reported significant improvements in school facilities. Bains stated that in 2022, nearly four lakh out of 28 lakh students in government schools had to sit on the ground due to lack of seating. Today, he confirmed, all students have proper seating. The free bus service for girl students currently benefits approximately 10,000 schoolgirls daily.
