Delhi HC Dismisses JEE Main Tampering Plea, Orders Community Service

The Delhi High Court dismissed an appeal from two students alleging tampering with their Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) 2025 answer sheets. The JEE Main is a national-level entrance examination for admission to various undergraduate engineering and architecture courses in India. The court directed the students to undertake one month of community service. This ruling overturns a previous order that had imposed a Rs 30,000 fine on each student. The National Testing Agency (NTA) had concluded there was no tampering, as reported by Live Law.

Community Service Replaces Fine

A divisional bench issued the new directive. Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela presided over the bench. They ordered the two Class 12 students to complete community service instead of paying a monetary penalty. One student will serve at an old age home. The other student will serve at a child care centre. Both placements are for a period of one month.

Allegations of Tampering Dismissed

The students initially challenged a single judge bench’s order. This order was passed on September 22, 2025 . They alleged irregularities had occurred in the conduct of the JEE (Main) 2025 examination. The single judge had previously found the students failed to successfully establish their case.

The High Court’s dismissal upheld the single judge’s findings. The court determined the previous order contained no legal flaw. The initial ruling relied on a detailed examination of forensic evidence. The National Cyber Forensic Laboratory (NCFL) conducted this analysis.

The NCFL’s findings concluded no tampering occurred with the answer sheets. The High Court noted the claims raised by the JEE Main students were insufficient. These claims did not adequately support their allegations of tampering.

Restrictions on Future JEE Attempts

During the court proceedings, counsel representing the students made a statement. They informed the bench that their clients voluntarily committed not to appear in the JEE examinations. This voluntary debarment applies to the 2025 and 2026 intake years. The court acknowledged this commitment.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), through its counsel, provided clarification. The NTA confirmed the students are barred only from JEE examinations for the specified years. No restriction exists for them to appear in any other competitive examinations. This ensures their eligibility for other tests remains unaffected.

Protecting Academic Futures

The High Court also addressed the long-term implications for the students. The court clarified its judgment regarding their future academic pursuits. The debarment from JEE 2025 and 2026 will not be treated as a stigma. This means the ruling should not negatively impact their future educational opportunities.

The court considered the students’ young age. They recently completed their Class 12 board examinations. The decision aims to prevent adverse impacts on their future. The court upheld the impugned judgment in its entirety, while adding this important clarification for their prospects.
