AIIMS Confirmed for Kerala, Union Minister Suresh Gopi States

Union Minister Suresh Gopi confirmed on Thursday that Kerala will receive an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Speaking to reporters in Guruvayur, Thrissur, Gopi also hinted at the allocation of another significant central government project to the state.

Major Central Projects for Kerala

Minister Gopi stated AIIMS would come to Kerala “organically,” not due to any individual’s specific efforts. He has maintained a consistent stand on AIIMS establishment in the state since 2015 . During his election campaign, Gopi promised to work for an AIIMS in Kerala, specifically mentioning Alappuzha or Thrissur as potential locations.

When asked about new projects expected by 2026 , Gopi declined to reveal details immediately. He indicated that prior disclosure might lead to their cancellation. The minister referred to a previous project, a proposed forensic laboratory, which he stated had been “eliminated” after its details became public.

However, Gopi confirmed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had already allotted another major project to Kerala. He stated the next step involves the state government allocating land for this new initiative. Details regarding the nature of this project remain undisclosed at this time.

Prime Minister’s Potential Visit

Gopi addressed inquiries about a potential visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Thiruvananthapuram following the BJP’s victory in the capital city corporation. He clarified that any declarations would come directly from the Prime Minister.

The Union Minister emphasized that Prime Minister Modi’s visit would likely not focus on an AIIMS announcement. Instead, Gopi suggested the Prime Minister would address the implementation status of his pet project, the Smart City, within the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. Discussions would primarily center on corporation-related matters.

Gopi’s Election Commitments and Political Significance

The establishment of an AIIMS in Kerala has been a consistent campaign promise by Suresh Gopi since he began campaigning in Thrissur. The Kerala state government has also repeatedly written to the Centre, requesting the allocation of an AIIMS facility.

During the last parliamentary election campaign, Gopi also advocated for the extension of the Kochi Metro to Coimbatore. In 2024 , Suresh Gopi, a renowned film actor, made history by becoming the first BJP leader to win a Lok Sabha seat from Kerala.
