IGNOU Rairangpur Centre Opens, Boosts Odisha AI Skills

President Droupadi Murmu recently inaugurated a new Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) regional and skill centre at Rairangpur, Odisha. The centre aims to provide expanded higher education, skill development, and livelihood opportunities to local communities, primarily within the tribal-dominated Mayurbhanj district.

The virtual inauguration focused on making educational resources more accessible to underserved populations. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary were present at the event, underscoring the government’s commitment to skill enhancement and regional development.

Expanding Education and Skill Development

The new IGNOU regional centre in Rairangpur will serve as a crucial educational and vocational hub for northern Odisha. Its primary objective is to enhance employability by delivering tailored, skill-oriented education and practical training. This approach directly addresses local economic needs and aims to integrate beneficiaries into the formal workforce.

The centre’s curriculum encompasses a broad range of high-demand sectors. Programs will be offered in areas such as agriculture and food processing, supporting local industry and entrepreneurship. The tourism and hospitality sectors will also feature prominently, preparing individuals for roles within the growing service industry. Additionally, courses in retail management, information technology (IT), and IT-enabled services will equip students with contemporary digital skills. Specialized entrepreneurship programs aim to foster new business ventures, promoting economic self-sufficiency within the region.

These diverse educational pathways are designed to create sustainable career trajectories for students. They will also provide crucial support for the development and expansion of local enterprises, fostering regional economic growth. The centre’s presence is expected to reduce the need for residents to relocate for advanced education or specialized training.

Strategic Focus on AI Skilling

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) organized the inauguration event with a clear strategic objective. The program reflected the government’s urgent push to prepare India’s workforce for an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven future economy. This national strategy aims to build a technologically competent human resource base ready for emerging industry demands.

During the event, President Murmu actively participated in the AI skilling initiative. She conferred AI certificates to a diverse group of learners, including students and sitting Members of Parliament. This act symbolized the widespread applicability and importance of AI literacy across all societal levels. Following this, President Murmu launched the national awareness campaign, #SkillTheNation challenge. This initiative specifically targets young adults, encouraging their active participation in future-ready skilling programs and fostering a culture of continuous learning.

Further demonstrating the commitment to AI education, a specialized “AI for Beginners” session was conducted. This session took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan in collaboration with Google, a global leader in AI technology. The introductory session aimed to demystify artificial intelligence, making its foundational concepts accessible and understandable for individuals new to the field. This collaboration highlights a public-private partnership approach to skill development.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan addressed the gathering, reaffirming India’s dedication to AI integration. He announced plans for India to host an AI impact conference later this year, a platform for discussions on AI’s transformative potential. Minister Pradhan underscored the critical importance of integrating AI knowledge effectively into the existing education system. This integration is seen as vital for ensuring that Indian students are globally competitive and prepared for future job markets.

President Murmu further articulated the necessity of AI literacy. She noted the pervasive and growing impact of AI across all sectors, making foundational understanding of AI essential for every citizen. Indian schools have already begun promoting AI learning through dedicated labs and structured modules. These programs aim to equip students with critical future-ready skills, ensuring they are prepared for an increasingly automated and data-driven world. The Rairangpur centre’s establishment aligns with this broader national vision, providing a localized platform for achieving these educational and skilling goals.
