Tripura Student’s Death: NSUI Protests Racial Violence in India

NEW DELHI – The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) recently conducted a candle march at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The protest followed the death of Anjel Chakma, a student from Tripura, in Dehradun. Chakma reportedly died after a physical assault. The NSUI demands justice for the victim.

Incident Details

Anjel Chakma, a student from Tripura, died after a beating in Dehradun. Attackers allegedly assaulted Chakma over his identity. They racially abused him, calling him “Chinese.” Chakma repeatedly stated, “I am an Indian too,” during the assault. The attack ultimately proved fatal.

NSUI’s Accusations Against Government

The NSUI alleges a delayed response from the BJP-led Uttarakhand government. Varun Choudhary, NSUI President, stated the administration failed to act for nearly 20 days after the incident. Choudhary said accused individuals roamed free during this period. An FIR was registered only after Anjel Chakma succumbed to his injuries. Public outrage then erupted, according to Choudhary.

Protests and Demands

Students’ Union members gathered at Jantar Mantar to demand action. The NSUI insists on strict punishment for the culprits. They also seek accountability from officials who allegedly tried to suppress the case. The candle march highlighted these demands for justice.

Blame on BJP-RSS for Spreading Hate

The NSUI directly blames the BJP and RSS for fostering a toxic atmosphere. The student wing states these incidents are not isolated events. They claim such attacks are a direct outcome of continuously spreading hate, division, and prejudice. Choudhary urged the BJP and RSS to stop promoting hatred against communities and people from the North East.

The NSUI asserts that repeated attacks and the confidence of criminals result from political protection. This protection emboldens perpetrators, the union claims. The organization called for immediate cessation of hate campaigns. It stressed the need to end discrimination and impunity across India.

Commitment to Combat Discrimination

The NSUI declared its commitment to resisting racism, hate crimes, and violence. The union stated that no Indian deserves hate for their identity or appearance. India belongs equally to every citizen, from the North East to other parts of the country, the student body affirmed. The candle march served as a symbol of this unwavering commitment.
