Delhi & IIT Kanpur Partner on AI for Pollution Control

NEW DELHI – The Delhi government is partnering with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) for identifying pollution sources. Officials announced the initiative on Sunday. This collaboration aims to pinpoint pollution origins at a granular level and assess their impact.

The environment department is preparing a roadmap for this partnership. Discussions will cover institutional mechanisms and phased implementation. Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa emphasized a shift towards data-driven decisions. He stated the new model focuses on real-time data, source identification, and measurable outcomes, replacing reactive measures.

AI for Pollution Source Identification

The proposed collaboration strengthens Delhi’s ability to identify pollution sources precisely. It allows for assessing their specific impact. This capability will enable targeted and timely interventions across various sectors.

The initiative prioritizes building systems for continuous monitoring, analysis, forecasting, and guiding action. A key component is dynamic source apportionment. This scientific method will identify specific contributions from different pollution sources. These include dust, transport, industry, biomass burning, and regional factors.

Such evidence will empower agencies to act directly at the source of pollution. This approach aims to prevent the need for broad restrictions and reactive measures, according to Minister Sirsa.

Multi-Agency Coordination and Current Actions

The collaboration also emphasizes multi-agency coordination. Municipal bodies, district administrations, enforcement agencies, and technical institutions will share data. This shared platform ensures clearly defined roles and accountability for each agency. Minister Sirsa stated that common scientific evidence will lead to faster, sharper, and more effective actions. This aims to transform Delhi’s pollution response from emergency firefighting to proactive prevention.

The Delhi government currently acts simultaneously on four key fronts. These include vehicular emissions, dust control, polluting industries, and waste management. Civic agencies provide round-the-clock interventions in these areas.

Ongoing Pollution Control Measures:

  • Vehicular Emissions: Interventions are continuous to curb pollution from vehicles.
  • Dust Control: Strict dust norms are enforced at construction sites. Mechanical road sweeping is implemented. Anti-smog guns and mist spray systems on electric poles address airborne particles.
  • Polluting Industries: District Magistrates and Divisional Commissioners lead surveys. Closure actions are underway against non-compliant industries.
  • Waste Management: Waste picking is intensified on streets. Bio-mining processes approximately 35 metric tons (MT) of legacy waste daily at all landfill sites. This effort significantly reduces existing waste mounds.
