Jadavpur Alumni Donate Rs 36.7 Lakh for Civil Engineering

Jadavpur University’s civil engineering department received a Rs 36.7 lakh contribution from its alumni. Graduates from the 1999 and 2000 batches provided the funds to establish a dedicated development fund. This financial support directly improved the department’s academic resources and infrastructure, leading to new facilities in 2024 and 2025 .

The 1999 batch contributed Rs 23.2 lakh . The 2000 batch added Rs 13.5 lakh . These donations totaled Rs 36.7 lakh . The contributions marked the silver jubilee celebrations for both graduating classes. Officials confirmed the fund’s purpose: to strengthen the department’s capabilities in academics and infrastructure for long-term growth.

Advancing Geotechnical Engineering Research

The alumni contributions funded a key initiative in 2024 : the establishment of a ‘computational geomechanics laboratory’. This laboratory features advanced, multifaceted geotechnical software, notably ‘PLAXIS’. ‘PLAXIS’ is a finite element program used globally for geotechnical analysis.

It allows engineers to model deformation and stability in various geotechnical applications, including excavations, embankments, and foundations. The new facility significantly enhances the department’s capacity for advanced research. It provides students and faculty with tools for complex numerical simulations, crucial for understanding soil and rock mechanics.

The laboratory also supports specialized teaching modules and practical training in both geotechnical and computational engineering. This directly prepares students for modern industry demands, where computational analysis plays a vital role in design and safety.

Modernizing Postgraduate Learning Spaces

Continuing their support, the alumni facilitated further development in 2025 . This phase involved the creation of “three smart classrooms” specifically for postgraduate students. These learning spaces are equipped with contemporary teaching technologies and digital tools.

The classrooms allow for interactive and technology-driven education. Features include advanced projection systems, interactive whiteboards, and integrated audio-visual equipment.

These tools support collaborative learning and modern pedagogical approaches. The upgrade aims to provide postgraduate students with a state-of-the-art learning environment. This fosters deeper engagement with course material and research discussions, enhancing academic experience and professional preparedness.

Department Head Commends Alumni Engagement

Anupam Dev Sarkar, Head of Jadavpur University’s Civil Engineering Department, expressed gratitude to the alumni. He specifically thanked the 1999 and 2000 batches for their contributions. Sarkar highlighted the alumni’s commitment to their alma mater.

He stated their support serves as an example of alumni engagement in academic excellence. Sarkar confirmed these contributions would benefit generations of students and researchers. He emphasized the direct impact on the department’s ability to offer cutting-edge education and research opportunities.
