IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi Campus to Double Student Strength to 400

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi-Abu Dhabi campus will nearly double its student strength to 400 next year. This marks a significant expansion from its current enrollment of 182 students. The growth aligns with the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) strategic focus on technology and sustainability sectors.

Shantanu Roy, Executive Director of IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi, confirmed the student expansion. He stated the campus expects to reach 400 students next year during a recent interaction with Indian media.

Campus Differentiation and UAE Priorities

IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi operates in a distinct geographic and economic context. The campus aligns its focus with the UAE’s national diversification strategy. Historically reliant on fossil fuels, the UAE now expands into new economic areas.

This diversification drives the educational and innovation ecosystem in Abu Dhabi. Priorities include energy , sustainability , Artificial Intelligence (AI) , and smart materials . These areas receive specific focus at the Abu Dhabi campus. Roy emphasized these subjects also hold importance for India and the Delhi campus.

The Abu Dhabi campus is not a separate entity. Roy clarified it functions as one global institution with three campuses. Abu Dhabi represents IIT Delhi’s first international campus location.

Student Diversity and Program Growth

The UAE’s location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia contributes to a diverse student population. This international connection is a key characteristic of the Abu Dhabi campus.

The campus began with 17 students in its first master’s program. Within six months, it launched two undergraduate programs. Around 50 students enrolled in these initial undergraduate courses.

IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi plans to introduce new undergraduate and master’s programs annually. It also anticipates growth in its PhD offerings each year. This steady expansion supports the campus’s increasing student numbers.

Curriculum and AI Integration

The curriculum at the Abu Dhabi campus closely mirrors that of IIT Delhi. Minor customizations address specific Middle East requirements. Accreditation standards mandate maintaining the parent campus’s ethos.

Teaching and research in AI form an integral part of the curriculum. Master’s programs in AI are available. The UAE heavily invests in AI innovation. India shares this focus.

The campus collaborates with Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI). This partnership enhances specialized AI degree programs. IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi will also offer a master’s program in AI, already available in Delhi.

Campus Development and Admissions

The current IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi facility is a transit campus. It features robust infrastructure. A permanent campus remains under development for future years. This permanent site will meet international standards for buildings and sustainability.

The IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi campus opened on September 2, 2024 . It operates under an agreement between India and the UAE. The campus is located in Khalifa City.

Undergraduate admissions use two pathways. JEE Advanced accounts for one-third of student intake. The Combined Admission Entrance Test (CAET) serves UAE residents. This includes expatriates who have lived in the UAE for at least five years.
