Kerala Condemns Private School Christmas Restrictions

The Kerala government has strongly condemned private schools for restricting Christmas celebrations and refunding collected funds. General Education Minister V Sivankutty announced an urgent inquiry into the incidents. He stated that schools must not be turned into “communal laboratories.”

Government Condemns Restrictions

Minister Sivankutty addressed reporters on Sunday. He criticized reports of private school managements imposing restrictions on Christmas events. Some schools had collected money from students for celebrations. These schools then cancelled events and refunded the money.

Sivankutty called these actions “unheard of in Kerala.” The state holds a strong democratic consciousness and a long-standing secular tradition. He stressed that Kerala’s educational institutions will not permit “north Indian models” that divide people by religion or belief.

Schools serve as spaces for children to learn and grow together. This occurs across all castes and religions. The Minister emphasized that any attempt to introduce divisive ideas among students is unacceptable. Kerala schools traditionally celebrate festivals such as Onam, Christmas, and Eid together. These celebrations foster mutual respect, love, and coexistence among children.

Inquiry Ordered into School Practices

The government considers the cancellation of celebrations after collecting funds “cruel.” This action directly harms children. All schools, including aided and unaided institutions, must adhere to the Indian Constitution. They must also follow the country’s education rules and laws. Schools bear a responsibility to uphold secular values.

Minister Sivankutty warned of strict action against schools engaging in such practices. He affirmed schools will not function to serve narrow political or communal interests. Imposing selective restrictions on any community’s celebrations constitutes discrimination. This will not be tolerated by the state government.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protect Kerala’s public education sector. Any move undermining its dignity and tradition will be prevented. Instructions have been issued to officials. They must conduct an urgent inquiry into the matter. Officials must submit a report promptly.

Compulsory Holiday Classes Criticized

The General Education Minister also reported receiving complaints from students and parents. These complaints concern compulsory special classes scheduled during the upcoming Christmas vacation. Such classes are not permitted during school holidays.

Sivankutty reiterated that students deserve their vacation time. Schools should respect holiday periods. The government will monitor schools to ensure compliance with this directive.
