CSJMU Research Gets ICSSR Nod for Joint Family Study

The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) has approved a major research project from Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU). Manas Upadhyay , an assistant professor in CSJMU’s Department of Lifelong Learning, will lead the study. The ICSSR has sanctioned a budget of Rs 15.10 lakh for the project.

The research project will run for 24 months . It focuses on understanding the impact of modern societal changes on Indian joint families.

Project Focus and Objectives

The project is titled ” Modernity and the Transformation of Joint Families: Changing Roles and Responsibilities .” It aims to examine key shifts within the traditional Indian joint family system. Researchers will study changes in family structure and decision-making processes. The project will also analyze evolving roles and responsibilities of family members.

Research Scope and Influencing Factors

The study will analyze how various societal factors influence joint families. These factors include:

  • Urbanization
  • Industrialization
  • Expansion of education
  • Changing employment patterns
  • Modern lifestyles

Researchers will document the effects of these factors on family relationships. They will also record impacts on authority structures within families. Changes in household responsibilities form another core area of documentation. The project seeks to enhance understanding of the contemporary family institution in Indian society.

Lead Researcher’s Background

Manas Upadhyay holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. He earned his PhD from Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Central University. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship, which the ICSSR supported.

Upadhyay has published over 25 research papers. These papers appeared in both national and international academic journals. His academic work includes books on education, social justice, the National Education Policy, Indian knowledge systems, and globalization. He previously led a research project funded by the Uttar Pradesh government.
