Tamil Nadu Plans School-ITI Vocational Training for Students

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department plans to integrate vocational training directly into government high and higher secondary schools. This initiative, in collaboration with the Department of Employment and Training, involves establishing Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) within existing school campuses. The primary objective is to equip students with practical, industry-relevant skills, enhancing their employability across various sectors.

ITIs provide specialized vocational education, focusing on trades and technical skills. Integrating these centers into schools aims to offer students both academic education and practical job-oriented training. This move seeks to bridge skill gaps between learning and modern workforce demands.

Officials from both state departments convened on December 4 to discuss the detailed proposal. The project is termed ‘School-ITI’. Discussions covered eligibility criteria for participating schools, procedural requirements for setup, and identifying potential challenges. Transforming existing school infrastructure to accommodate specialized ITI facilities is a key challenge.

A senior School Education Department official confirmed meeting insights. The Employment and Training Department suggested initiating a pilot phase, starting with ITIs in at least 10 schools . These discussions remain preliminary. The immediate, widespread rollout of the full project is not yet confirmed.

School-ITI Selection Process

To identify suitable locations, Chief Educational Officers (CEOs) in selected districts have received directives. They must compile and submit lists of eligible government high and higher secondary schools within one week . The selection process prioritizes schools where the ‘School-ITI’ initiative can be effective, operationally feasible, and maximally beneficial for students.

Key Requirements for Establishing a School-ITI:

  • At least half an acre of land within current school premises is mandatory for ITI facility setup.
  • Schools must permit using underutilized laboratories and other existing school buildings for vocational training.
  • Prioritization will favor areas underserved by vocational training centers, ensuring equitable access to skill development.
  • Preference will be given to schools near industrial zones. This proximity is crucial for fostering industrial linkages, facilitating apprenticeships, and creating clear pathways to future employment.

Addressing Workforce Skill Gaps

Should the ‘School-ITI’ initiative be fully implemented, it could establish a model for integrating comprehensive vocational training into the conventional school curriculum. This directly addresses identified skill gaps across various industries. It also prepares students for specific industrial demands at an earlier, more impactful stage in their education.

By offering practical industrial skills during secondary school years, the program aims to create a direct pipeline from education to skilled employment. This approach could significantly enhance student readiness for the job market immediately upon completing school. Further announcements on implementation timelines and specific training modules are anticipated as discussions progress.
