The Ministry of Education released Rs 82.72 crore to 26 Sanskrit institutions for the 2024-25 financial year. These funds were disbursed under the Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya (ASM) and Adarsh Sanskrit Shodha Sansthan (ASSS) schemes.
The schemes aim to modernize and promote traditional Sanskrit education and research. Data from the Education Ministry, presented in the Lok Sabha, detailed the funding distribution across various states.
Bihar received the highest share of the grants, totaling Rs 17.78 crore for five institutions. Uttar Pradesh was the second-highest recipient, with Rs 11.76 crore allocated to three institutions.
Conversely, Manipur’s Radha Madhava Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya in Nambol received the least funding. The single institution was granted Rs 0.71 crore .
National Initiatives for Language Promotion
Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, the government outlined broader efforts to promote Sanskrit. The Central Sanskrit University in Delhi oversees 11 distinct central schemes.
These schemes support the growth and study of Sanskrit, Pali, and Prakrit languages. This includes academic development, research activities, and infrastructure improvements for educational centers.
Currently, 26 institutions benefit from assistance under the Adarsh schemes. The Ministry of Education also confirmed that 31 new funding proposals are under active consideration. Current guidelines state there is no fixed deadline for approving these new proposals.
Detailed State-Wise Funding Highlights
Bihar’s five institutions collectively received Rs 17.78 crore . Dr. Ramji Mehta Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya in Bihar secured the largest individual grant within the state, amounting to Rs 4.92 crore .
Uttar Pradesh’s three institutions received a total of Rs 11.76 crore . Among these, Rani Padmawati Tara Yogtantra Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya received Rs 6.79 crore , making it the highest single grant recipient in the state.
West Bengal’s two institutions were allocated a combined Rs 10.30 crore . Sri Sitaram Vaidic Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya received a substantial Rs 6.08 crore of this total.
Tamil Nadu received Rs 8.33 crore for its two participating institutions. The Madras Sanskrit College & S.S.V. Patasala accounted for Rs 5.84 crore of this amount.
Other significant allocations included Kerala with Rs 4.79 crore for two institutions and Himachal Pradesh with Rs 7.90 crore for two institutions.
