Candidates secured MBBS seats in Maharashtra with scores as low as 114 marks in private medical colleges during the NEET UG 2025 counselling. In contrast, government medical colleges closed admissions for the open category at 500 marks . This wide gap highlights differing admission criteria and competition levels.
State data reveals all 8,141 MBBS seats in Maharashtra were filled, showing zero vacancies. Only three of 2,675 BDS seats remained unfilled. The admission process for NEET UG 2025 exposed significant disparities between cut-offs for government and private institutions.
Government vs. Private MBBS Cut-offs
The open category remained highly competitive for government MBBS seats, closing at All India Rank (AIR) 52437 with 500 marks. Private colleges allotted MBBS seats for ranks beyond 12 lakh, accepting scores of 118, 115, and 114 in the final rounds.
Reserved categories also showed varied cut-offs. Vimukta Jati (VJ) and Nomadic Tribes (NT-1, NT-2, NT-3) recorded some of the highest marks within reserved groups for government seats. NT-3 closed at 477 marks, followed by VJ at 446 marks. These marks were higher than those for OBC and EWS categories.
Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) saw government MBBS admissions close at 306 marks (AIR 425337). Private colleges admitted SEBC candidates at 130 marks (AIR 1190007) in the last round.
Lowest MBBS Admissions
The lowest government quota MBBS admission in Maharashtra was recorded under the Orphan category at 115 marks (AIR 1297175). For private colleges, a Linguistic / Institutional Quota (LQ) candidate with 114 marks secured an MBBS seat, marking the lowest NEET score for admission in the 2025 cycle.
These lowest scores are not general merit cut-offs. They represent admissions made during the second stray vacancy and institute-level rounds. These rounds occur after top-ranking candidates have secured seats or withdrawn from the process.
SSPM Medical College Case
Sindhudurg Shikshan Prasarak Mandal (SSPM) Medical College admitted a candidate with 118 marks , according to State CET Cell sources. This score represents only 16% in the NEET UG 2025 exam. SSPM Medical College also faced criticism for allegedly charging excess fees during the stray vacancy round.
A Bombay High Court interim order permitted private colleges to fill remaining seats to prevent vacancies. This led to an institute-level counselling round after a provisional merit list of 44,702 candidates for the second stray vacancy round. Nearly 45,000 candidates competed for 224 MBBS and 163 BDS seats in this phase. The CET Cell allotted government quota seats, while private colleges filled 15% institutional quota seats independently.
